The Simple Path to Wealth

If I were to recommend just one book to read to help you successfully retire early, it would be The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins. The key word in the title is “simple.” Collins does an amazing job of simplifying and demystifying the complicated world of investing.

My wife Allison and I have always tried to keep our investments as simple as possible, mainly with TRFs (Target Retirement Funds). While Collins is a proponent of TRFs, he takes it a step further and recommends just two funds -- VTSAX (Vanguard Total US Stock Fund) and VBTLX (Vanguard Total US Bond Fund).

This book will show you how to use those two funds to simply and effectively build your retirement nest egg. It goes on to offer very valuable information like how to use HSAs for your health expenses, how to prepare for RMDs (Required Minimum Deductions), and how to pull your money out after retirement.

One of my favorite chapters is “How to give like a billionaire,” which explains how to set up a charitable foundation, and why it’s the best way to manage your charitable donations.
